a merkypie in japan

So, this past week has been one… eventful week. The Q&A was interesting. After showing up 30 minutes late due to traffic (what was assumed to be a 30 minute trip from where I was at ended up becoming an hour and fifteen) I learned some new things on what to do and what to expect when I depart. Half of which I have already forgotten.

I’m sure I’m going to get an email full of information before I jump on a plane and freak out.

I also surrendered my passport along with my visa application. I won’t be seeing that wonderful little book until August 4th. So any plans of me escaping the country for crimes committed are not possible.

The day after the Q&A, I got my welcome information from my BoE. A wonderful welcome letter, notice of appointment, and contract. In English and Japanese. Yay~!

This is where ESID slapped me with a brick.

The JET Program information suggests that 250,000 yen be brought with us to Japan for start up funds. This 250,000 ($2,500 (lets pretend its 2006, okay)) is supposed to cover all of our initial expenses and hold us through until we get paid. Well, in my situation, 200,000 of that 250,000 is supposed to go straight to my apartment fees.

When I saw that 200,000 in my contact, I thought it was a typo. Then I read it again. Then I asked about it.

Lol, naw man. Not a typo. That is a legit figure.

Commence the freak out of all freak outs. Even my family started freaking out.

Luckily, everything managed to work out in some way or another.

Then, this week was the quest to find the pred. Now, I’ve been in communication with them since I found out I was heading to good ol’ Ishikawa, but we didn’t know who was replacing who and neither did the preds. So, finally, around Tuesday we found out that we were inheriting each other.  One successor got two preds and and one pred got two successors.

If that make any sense.

So, I am inheriting one pred’s schools and another’s living situation.

But not her apartment.

I’m getting a new apartment in the same building of the pred who’s school’s I’m taking over.

If this is not ESID, then I don’t know what is.

The apartment looks a-ma-zing. It’s a large 2DK with a big genkan. That’s pretty much all I know about it. It has a huge genkan. I don’t have to worry about evil crazy madmen breaking in cause the genkan is like its own separate room. I can host dinner parties and get togethers and still be relatively comfortable. :) I also got my address (sort of, not sure on the apartment number), so I’ve been giving it to my close friends and fam.

I am contractually obligated to own a car. Apparently its a 2000 Mazda AZ Wagon. My living situation pred is selling it to me for 130,000 and I’m buying that off of her. My living situation pred is also selling me all the furniture and everything in the apartment, like dishes and stuff, for a flat 20,000. I’m buying that too. She’s also selling me a 40 inch flat screen for 50,000 but I’m on the fence about that one.

I do love watching my Japanese dramas but do I really need to see Yokoyama Yuu’s pores that badly?? Decisions.

I’m almost in Japan. I’m freaking out. This shit is becoming realer every moment.

Merky, you’ll be fine! When will you receive pictures of your apartment? I’m so excited for you!

I backed out of buying my pred’s tv. I was like… later. I got the internet. Funds are too tight for that luxury. I’m sure I’ll be out exploring anyway.

I hope all works out with your set up costs. Maybe JET should be a little more real and say ‘300,000’ off the bat. And put a side note of, if you are able to save 500,000. I think this will be my advice to all that apply for 2013

I found your site from lj or some forum.
Yes, you need to see Yoko’s pores in HD. just kidding.

I’m a JET and was without a decent TV for almost two year, but I bought one recently. It’s awesome, but I had the money saved for it. If you decide to get one, I’m sure you can find used or a sale.
